The Belle Brigade - The Belle Brigade REVIEW

The Belle Brigade are a brother/sister duo from Los Angeles - Ethan & Barbara Gruska. They grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel along with The Beatles and you can hear hints of it on their self-titled debut. Their debut album just hit stores this past week via Reprise Records. Their songs all consist of a constant California sound and vibe.

They create simple sounds with huge folky harmonies - singing about peace and love and everything nice. There is also a decent number of themes of being "outcasts" or "different" and how they are ok with that. On the standout track 'Losers' the lyrics are filled with the references of being different or not good enough...

There will always be someone better than you
Even if you're the best
So let's stop the competition now
Or we will both be losers

And I'm ashamed I ever tried to be higher than the rest
But brother I am not alone
We've all tried to be on top of the world somehow
'Cause we have all been losers

For some reason I just love this track 'Losers' it feels as if it is just a raw version of the duo's life showing their emotions through the song. This is one of my favourite songs of the year so far, and by the end of the year I am sure it will continue to still be in the mix as well.

The other track worth mentioning from the album is 'Sweet Louise' it is the opener and really starts things off with a band. It is almost a sing along type of song with its sweet melodies. The rest of the album is very upbeat, featuring some nice lyrics, a low key vibe, and a whole lotta pop.
