City and Colour, the recording alias for Dallas Green (former guitarist and vocalist of the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire) released his third studio album in June titled "Little Hell." Despite serving in a hardcore band, his music is described as acoustic music, folk, and alternative country.
In 2005 Green began releasing songs on the internet for fans to download which eventually became the first City and Colour album "Sometimes. In 2008 Dallas released his second full length LP "Bring Me your Love", featuring a variety of instruments including a harmonica, banjo, drums, and lap steel promoting its folk sound. In 2010 Green began performing many of the songs for his next album Little Hell. Recorded in January of 2011, "Fragile Bird" became the album's first single. Soon following, the album was released June 7, 2011 being highly successful debuting at #1 on Canadian Albums Chart and selling over 20,000 copies in its first week. The album also debuted at #28 on the US Billboard 200.
From a personal standpoint I had heard of City and Colour, actually having a few promo tracks in my iTunes library. Truthfully I hadn't really dived into the band until a few days ago when I had heard they were coming into town. I rather enjoy the album quite a bit. I especially enjoy the combination of the "man and his guitar" and the "band upbeat/poppy" sound. A good example of this, which happens to be my favorite part of the album, is the way opening track "We Found Each Other in the Dark" flows into "Natural Disaster." Overall the whole album is great, each song is carefully crafted and sincere giving it a magical and unique sound. Two thumbs up.
City and Colour are playing in Salt Lake City this Friday November 11 at In the Venue.
