Greene has a subtle way of building energy during his live shows. He appears to know that many of the fans come from the Grateful Dead followers so he shows his own support to them and the groups that have obviously inspired him by playing some Grateful Dead favorites with “Bertha”, “Shakedown Street”, a “Casey Jones” instrumental interlude, and even a tease of “Terrapin” near the end.
The whole evening felt very covers heavy. The highlight of the evening for me was the epic combination of “Heard it Through the Grape Vine” which went into “Another Brick in the Wall(Instrumental)” by Pink Flloyd, followed by the Dead’s “Shakedown Street” into the “Casey Jones(Instrumental)” and then finally back to a short “Heard it Through the Grape Vine(Reprise). It was a you’ve-got-to-be-there kind of moment that won’t leave my mind any time soon.
Jackie did play plenty of his own tunes as well which are just as strong in my opinion. “Gone Wanderin’” is one of my personal favorites of his and was certainly welcome to hear live as well as “Hollywood”, and “I Don’t Live in a Dream.”
Overall the evening was quite exceptional. I felt that the second set was missing the momentum that the first set had built up but I still walked away from the show excited for the next time he comes to town.
