Refused Announce End of Reunion

A personal favorite of mine, the Swedish punk group Refused, has announced that their reunion will come to an end in December. They will go out with a bang playing their final show at their home, Umea, Sweden on the 15th.

Here is the letter that was put up on Refused's Facebook page, announcing the decision to end the reunion:

So there were those years right after school, when you were 15 and pissed off and everyone thought you were a loser and you ran around with the other weirdos, generating weirdness and little else. And there were those years when what set you apart from the others become a fixation and a lifestyle and you had a band and people talked about what you did but you were so used to being weird you just lumped them in with the rest of the slanderers. Then there were those years when the ideas you'd clung to through late adolescence were beginning to ring hollow and you got more and more confused and destructive and the band broke up and you had rent to pay. That was among the tougher years. And then slowly, over a span of time, you began to sort yourself out and your friends started making sensible decisions in their lives and it suddenly began to seem like most of you were gonna be ok.

And then there was the year when you stopped being a petulent kid and you got your favorite musicians together in a room again and decided that you were gonna accept the love of thousands of listeners, accept the success that was waiting there to be had and just in general enjoy being appreciated for the exact same qualities that made you a freak to your contemporaries in your teens. This was one of the better years.

And now it is coming to a close. It's been kind to us. And that old punkrock golem "The shape of punk to come" has done good. The hatchet is buried, 1998 is not such a terrible memory for us anymore. We're going home. And we're doing it in style.

With old friends and new acquaintances in tow we're gonna take over our old hometown Umeå for one more night, just because we can. On the 15th of December at the Exel arena we'll be sharing the stage with these magnificent comrades: Randy (, a band of punkrock bandidos from the north who we befriended years before we even were Refused, Two White Horses, an excellent sister/brother-duo from Sävar, both of whom we've individually collaborated with in different musical projects through the years, and Råd Kjetil Senza Testa, a new and exciting musical collective consisting of old Umeå pop and hardcore scenesters, among them the guy who produced the very first version of New Noise for a local hardcore compilation in early 1997. We unconditionally endorse these bands.

Great music, good crude fun, what more do you need? It's going to be one of those nights.

Thank you for populating the pit in 2012.

Over and out.

As you can see there is a link to purchase tickets to the last hoorah of one of the greatest punk bands of all time... you know, just in case you find your self in Sweden in the middle of December.

Here is a video for one of my favorite songs, by any artist, of all time:

Refused - New Noise

Titus Andronicus - In a Big City VIDEO

You Won't - Television

I actually somehow just stumbled across You Won't today and have had to play the debut album Skeptic Goodbye a couple times already. This song 'Television' is about as catchy as a song that I can recall in some time. Their sound reminds me a lot of that of The Tallest Man On Earth, just a straight up honest and heart felt, folksy sound that you always seem to want to come back to.

Take a listen to the song below along with an acoustic version.

Sufjan Stevens - Mr. Frosty Man

Here is the newest Christmas addition to Sufjan Stevens catalog. 'Mr. Frosty Man' is a fun video that brings Plasticine Christmas to life - it is also a video that you wouldn't dare let your children watch even though there is Play Doh involved.

Look for Sufjan Stevens gigantic box set Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas Volumes 6-10, which will be out November 13th via the Asthmatic Kitty label.

Wild Nothing - Paradise VIDEO

Pitchfork just premiered the stellar video for Wild Nothing's 'Paradise' single. The video stars Academy Award Nominated actress Michelle Williams, and takes you on a story filled plane ride with some waterfalls in the mix. The video was directed by Matt Amato and truly does the song justice.

of Montreal "Daughter of Cloud" Review

Daughter of Cloud, the latest compilation album from Athens experimental band of Montreal is set to hit stores tomorrow. The album consists of 17 unreleased tracks with some dating back to 2007. The album's opener "Our Love is Senile," sounds like something recorded in between the well received Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer and False Priest, resembling tracks like "Enemy Gene" or "Sex Karma" which also happen to be personal favorites. Even the album's second track "Obviousatonicnuncio" sounds like something that may have been recorded around the False Priest era noticing the synth and catchy guitar riffs that are apparent on many of of Montreal's later albums.

Overall it's pretty hard to pinpoint exactly when each track was recorded, yet the album delivers a diverse mix of songs from of Montreal, showing the bands ability to change. "Georgies Lament" continues with a sexual theme and somewhat bizarre lyrics that Barnes is often known for, then placed on top of a playful rhythm that seems to work fairly well. I have to say that, I am probably a bit biased due to my love for of Montreal, but even some of the songs are a bit to heavy and chaotic for me. "Sails, Hermaphroditic" starts off with a heavy guitar riff eventually transitioning into an overload of highs and lows crammed into one song. "Steppin' Out" is another track that is too experimental for my liking with a voice overlay and too many effects for one song. Without hatin' too much, two unfavorable songs out of 17 isn't bad, considering both of those songs have serious potential if they had a little more direction.

The album shows what Barnes is truly capable of with some of the best tracks like "Feminine Effects" a softer piano driven ballad featuring Rebecca Cash on vocals. The following song ,"Tendar Fax" is another favorable one thrown into the mix that sounds pre-Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer, being less experimental more rock and roll. "Pyschotic Feeling" a catchy pop song and "Noir Blues to Tinnitus" an instrumental driven track with minimal vocals, may just be two of the best songs on the album proving Barnes to be the gifted musician he is.

Overall, being a compilation album, I enjoy it quite a bit. Having a few expected lows, the album is mostly filled with highs consisting of a diverse amount of songs ranging from different time periods in of Montreal's career. The album shows what Kevin Barnes is really capable of, which is really anything whether he experiments more or even less. And if we are lucky, maybe of Montreal will debut a few songs such as "Femine Effects" or "Psychotic Feeling" live this fall.

of Montreal will be playing in Milwaukee at Turner Hall on December 8th Tickets Available HERE. For other tour dates be sure to visit of Montreal's site

Little Green Cars - The John Wayne

Little Green Cars grew up together in Dublin and came together five years ago at the age of 15. Their musical influences range from REM to Elliott Smith, and their sound is one that is well beyond their actually age. The band has spent the summer getting their debut album up and ready for release early next year. Markus Dravs is producing the album and has a great resume of some pretty successful acts such as Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, and Coldplay - he must know a good sound when he hears one.

Little Green Cars are:
Stevie Appleby - Vocals/Guitar
Faye O'Rourke - Vocals/Guitar
Donagh Seaver O'Leary - Bass/Vocals
Adam O'Regan - Guitar/Vocals
Dylan Lynch - Drums/Vocals

TOUCAN - Mr Television

Toucan are a boy/girl duo out of Sydney, Australia who formed in mid 2011. They currently have their debut video 'Mr Television' out now and have been a featured artist on Triple J Unearthed. They have also toured nationally supporting, The Kooks.

Concert Preview - Father John Misty & La Sera - Lincoln Hall 10/30

The end of the month of October holds huge opportunities for music lovers in the hub of the Milwaukee/Chicago area. And although this particular tour is skipping Milwaukee, it's a must-see for me, so making the trek to Chicago will definitely be worth it.

I mean, what better way to spend the days before Halloween than with the tongue-in-cheek cunning of Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty at one of my favorite venues in America's Midwest? I'm far-reached to find one, and if you have something better, I dare you to present it to me.

The bill for this show is a complete winner, with La Sera opening up for FJM. Former member of Vivian Girls, Katy Goodman, performs now as La Sera, and released her sophomore album earlier this year: Sees The Light. The album serves as a breakup manifesto, almost, with tracks based entirely on the musical aspects of getting over someone, even if that person is yourself.

The beautiful red-headed songstress will be performing songs from Sees The Light as well as her self-titled debut album, and with the right amount of crowd support, the sing-along aspects of the songs will play like early-Weezer tracks or your favorite Yuck songs. Each song off her new album, whether dreary and self-loathing ("Love That's Gone" or "Don't Stay") or upbeat and pop-punk influenced (such as "Break My Heart") maintains a country sensibility to it. To be completely honest, La Sera is one of my favorite new artists I've heard from this year; "Real Boy" is an almost nauseatingly catchy song that will be played on heavy rotation from now until the day of the show. You can find a song off the new album below.

Since hearing Father John Misty back in Spring of this year, I've been anxiously awaiting seeing the Josh Tillman alter-ego live. His album, Fear Fun, is easily one of my favorite albums of the year. Tillman, of Fleet Foxes fame, offers a new sound with FJM, without straying too far from the sound Fleet Foxes has been known for, producing songs deeply influenced by folk music of days' past. The twist that comes with the new sound is a little bit more electric rock and a humorous sense of self-deprecation, brought forth in the music's lyrics. Each song off the album is a spectacle in some shape or form, and Tillman's live performance on Letterman earlier this year gives reason enough to catch his live show.

Fear Fun captures a sound that cures every aspect of Fleet Foxes that grew tiresome after a while. At times, Foxes got to be a little droning and tiresome, with a lot of the tracks bleeding in to another, not offering much different of a sound than the previous song. I'm not saying Foxes doesn't make beautiful, graceful music, but Father John Misty is a well-received change of pace and worth every moment spent listening to.

Take a listen to highlighted tracks from both artists below, videos from Father John Misty for "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" and La Sera's "Real Boy/Drive On" video.

Father John Misty - "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings"

Play It Forward - Hugh Bob & The Hustle

Country music is an intensely confusing genre of music. It's easy for someone to say "I hate country music" these days, because when most people think of country music, it's the Taylor Swifts, Dierks Bentleys and Blake Sheltons that they're more than likely speaking of. I'll be the first to tell you: modern popular "country" music is the pits.

Having said that, the page is turning on country music, and labels are snatching up artists like The Lumineers, Father John Misty, and Alabama Shakes, who all have deep country music influences. Not coincidentally, these artists have all released albums this year that will be gracing many Top Ten lists from many of my journalist colleagues.

Enter: Hugh Bob & The Hustle.

Already a pseudo-legend here in Milwaukee, Hugh Masterson has been a critical part of the city's music scene for some time now, most recently as the bassist for an act called The Wildbirds, who were a local favorite of many people in the city. After the split of The Wildbirds, Masterson decided to take the role of frontman and focus on song writing. The result is the debut effort of Hugh Bob & The Hustle, a  self-titled, full-length album.

The album is a healthy length, with 11 songs coming in at around 40 minutes total play time. The songs seem to be very therapeutic and autobiographical for Masterson, while still managing to sound like old fashioned, northern folklore-based country songs. The album's lead off song, "Ashland County" is named for the actual county Hugh Bob himself hails from, while "Milwaukee Man" pays homage to his current city of residence. Other standout tracks include the uptempo "Blame Me" and the  catchy "Passenger Side" which features a hefty amount of giddy organ parts.

It's difficult to describe Hugh Bob's debut album as anything but traditional, but by no means is it generic; the songs get a little hokey at times (for example "This Bars A Prison"), but that's not saying that they're stale. Even when the lyrics illicit a smirk, the melodies prove to be overcoming and incredibly enjoyable.

A noteworthy element to the album is the guest stars, which include Nathaniel Markman (violinist, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros), Jon Graboff (guitar/slide-guitar, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals) and Nashville-based singer Nikki Lane all contribute to songs on the album.

The album is definitely worth checking out, which you can do at the band's Soundcloud page, and you can take a listen to the track "Blame Me" below.

The band will be playing CMJ in New York this week:
Wednesday, Oct. 18 - Rockwood Music Hall @ Midnight
Thursday, Oct. 19 - Bowery Electric @ 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 19 - Cake Shop @ 10 p.m.

Music Video: Bon Iver's "Beth/Rest"

Below you will find the latest music video from Bon Iver, which was collaboratively directed by Justin Vernon and Dan Huiting (remember that name - Dan Huiting is putting together a full-length doc about Bon Iver). The video features an eery, Fern Gully-like setting with Bon Iver's own Mike Noyce "starring."

In a press statement about the video, Justin Vernon remarked:
"It's kind of about two people who are truly meant for each other and what happens to their essence. How they connect is some other thing that we don't know how to really talk about."
Take that for what it's worth, and check out the video below.

Taken By Trees - Large VIDEO

Taken By Trees is the solo project of The Concretes frontwoman Victoria Bergsman. I have always thought The Concretes were one of those underrated bands that never got their big break. Here is the new video for the single 'Large', which is taken from the album Other Worlds. If Bergsman's lush voice sounds familiar it is probably because you have heard it a thousand times before as she shared here vocals on Peter, Bjorn & John's 'Young Folks'.

The Babies - Get Lost

The Babies are set to release their sophomore album, Our House On The Hill which will be released via Woodsist Records. Take a listen to one of the new cuts from the album 'Get Lost'. The album will be released November 13th, and the tracklist is as follows.

1) Alligator
2) Slow Walkin
3) Mess Me Around
4) Get Lost
5) Baby
6) Mean
7) On My Team
8) Moonlight Mile
9) See the Country
10) That Boy
11) Chase it to the Grave
12) Wandering

Coldplay - Hurts Like Heaven VIDEO

Everyone has their own personal opinions on Coldplay and that is fine by me. I will admit as a fan of the band Mylo Xyloto really never seemed to impress. The lone bright spot on the album though had to be 'Hurts Like Heaven' which now has its own animated video. The video was directed by Mark Osborne and is the prequel to the story of Mylo Xyloto, which is told in a six part comic series.

The Vaccines - I Always Knew VIDEO

'I Always Knew' is the new single from The Vaccines from their sophomore effort Come of Age. Check out the video below, which was directed by Jesse John Jenkins.

Edward Sharpe Debuts Video for "Child"

Here we have the new video from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, for their next single, "Child". The song - my favorite from ESTMZ's sophomore album, Here, is subtly uplifting, and while the video plays on the motifs of the lyrics blatantly, it is still enjoyable to watch.

Concert PREVIEW: Passion Pit & Youngblood Hawke: Riverside Theater Nov. 1

This time of year is always busy in Milwaukee, especially for an avid concert-goer. October thru November brings some amazing names through the midwest, with many of them making stops in Milwaukee, Chicago, and the Minneapolis areas. It can be difficult for one to make choices with a limited budget in mind, so careful deliberation must be taken in order to not waste your hard-earned money.

Well I present you with probably one of the safest bets of the season in Milwaukee: Passion Pit is slotted to perform November 1 at the always remarkable Riverside Theater. The show is general admission, which means your spot in the theater is first-come, first-serve. And that's not the only reason to show up early.

Opening band Youngblood Hawke are a group of musicians that have been through quite a bit on their own, individual musical endeavors and in result came together to produce music much more inspirational and personal. The group, based out of L.A., are a perfect fit to be the opening act for a group like Passion Pit.

Much like Passion Pit, Youngblood Hawke focuses on electro-pop and catchy synth parts behind multi-layered vocals. The songs are inspiring and uplifting in nature, featuring heavy amounts of sing-along choruses that will more than likely go over just fine with the crowd that shows up early. The band will be performing tracks off of their recently released self-titled EP. Be sure to check out the album, streaming over at Soundcloud before the show.

Passion Pit is touring in efforts to promote their newest album, Gossamer, which came out this summer. Equally as poppy as it is emotionally overridden, the album delivers great sing-alongs paired with incredibly visceral lyrics. And (whether it was planned or not) the album came with quite a buzz about it, as frontman Michael Angelakos revealed his troubled past, and his coping with depression and bipolar disorder. His condition reached a point that was so concerning, it forced the group to cancel many dates this past summer, so that Angelakos could recover and not be forced to deal with the stress of touring for months on end.

I got the chance to see Passion Pit at Lollapalooza this year, and was somewhat underwhelmed. Their set seemed disconnected, and there were rumors that Angelakos was reading lyrics from a teleprompter (I have yet to confirm this as true). However, I gave the band a pass on their poor performance, mainly due to the fact that the band hadn't really played live too many times before that, since the new album (and Angelakos' conditions) were released. Not a lot of practice time, I'd hope, was the reason behind the disappointing sound.

But all that can change on November 1. I've seen Passion Pit play live in club and theater settings, and they did nothing but amaze and deliver. Their sound was pitch perfect and the energy was intense and uplifting. One can hope that this time through Milwaukee, Passion Pit will deliver exactly what we all know they're capable of: sing-alongs and smiles on the faces of every individual lucky enough to catch their show.

Be sure to check out the Official After Party/ Passion Pit DJ Set at Milwaukee's Library Club after the show! You can buy tickets here - only $5 for a limited time!

Unlike any area media outlet, Fake Plastic Tunes will have FULL COVERAGE (including photo coverage) of this show and the After Party, so be sure to check back when the show's done!

Crystal Castles Live REVIEW- Charlotte, NC 9/27

With their third full-length album (III) set for release in November, Crystal Castles began an exhaustive tour on September 27 at The Fillmore in Charlotte, NC.  Chronicling a live Crystal Castles show is a lot like attempting to accurately re-enanct mass hysteria, but this much can be certain- if you thought their live presence was electrifying on previous circuits, prepare yourself for the "steroid version" in 2012 and beyond.  Crawling across the stage on all fours Exorcist-style to the pulse of setlist opener "Plague" (one of the two new singles already released from III), Alice Glass sported a freakishly purple/blonde bob that caused her to resemble a cross between Heath Ledger's Joker and Effie Trinkett from The Hunger Games series.  It was one of the rare times that the essence of shock factor felt genuine and organic- it didn't hurt that what followed was a typically unpredictably shattering performance from the the increasingly legendary frontwoman (with no less than six crowd surf moments).  Not to be overlooked was Alice Glass' reliable partner in chaos, Ethan Kath, who radiated intensity as he lurked behind the Korg stage right.  One of the highlights of the evening was the duo disappearing behind the equipment to deliver an epic smorgasbord mashup of fan favorites "Vanished", "Crimewave", and "Untrust Us".

Bottom line- this is either your type of thing or not.  But if you're even remotely curious, jump at the opportunity to experience Crystal Castles when they come near.  It's obvious these guys are in the midst of honing their craft to another level and it would be a shame to miss it.  Now... bring on III.

Alabama Shakes - I Ain't The Same VIDEO

Alabama Shakes are fresh off their release of their debut album Boys and Girls, and are continuing to deliver from the album. The band recently debut their newest video for single "I Ain't The Same' which can be seen below. The video was directed by Jane Pollard, and features the band playing in London's Konk Studios.
